Classes, Schedule and Registration


 

Our 2023 sailing classes and schedule are described below.

Small Fries


For ages 7-10. This class is for beginner and first time sailors with no experience necessary. Sailors gain comfort and confidence on the water. At the end of the 4-week session, sailors will have learned some basic seamanship skills and nomenclature. Group lessons are taught in club-owned RS Quests and Club 420s with a Junior Instructor on-board. Class size will be limited for safety reasons and determined by the Program Director. Sailors must be able to swim comfortably with a properly fitting life jacket and shoes.


A Group

Schedule Monday/Wednesday/Thursday 9:00am - 12:00pm

B Group

Schedule (2 days per week) Tuesday/Friday 9:00am - 12:00pm

Adventure


For ages 11 to 16. This class focuses on giving sailors the knowledge and independence to navigate the waters outside of “the points” of Wild Harbor. At the end of the 4-week session, sailors in this class will be able to sail without the assistance of instructors and help in planning some longer adventures for the program. Sailors do NOT need to own a boat as lessons are provided in club-owned RS Quests and Club 420s. Class size will be limited for safety reasons and determined by the Program Director.

Opti Beginner

 

Ages 7-9. This is an introduction to sailing the optimist dinghy. Participants must provide a boat, but do not need any sailing experience. By the end of the 4-week session, sailors should be sailing on their own in and out of the harbor and acquire basic seamanship skills that are focused on the Optimist dinghy. Class size will be limited for safety reasons and determined by the Program Director. Sailors must be able to swim comfortably with a properly fitting life jacket and shoes.

Opti Intermediate

 Ages 9+, This class is a deeper dive into sailing skills and seamanship, the Intermediate class will develop some basic racing knowledge and begin to understand the concepts of sailing from a physics perspective. Sailors in this class are encouraged to participate in the  Saturday Race series at the club and to attend the home UNKIE cup at the end of the season. At the end of the 4-week session, sailors will feel comfortable sailing their boats in a range of wind conditions. Participants must provide a boat, and should have completed one full season in the Opti Beginner class and have the recommendation of their previous instructors. Class size will be limited for safety reasons as determined by the Program Director.

Opti Advanced

Ages 9+, This is an introduction to boat handling skills to enhance speed and agility in the Optimist. Participants have completed 2 to 3 years of Opti classes and must be recommended by an instructor or the program director to sign up for this class. Sailors will participate in all four Unkie Cup races with coaches assisting both on and off the water. Transportation to and from events is the responsibility of the sailors & families; however, trailer spots are available by sign up sheets. Participants must provide a boat and class size will be limited for safety reasons as determined by the Program Director.

Opti Race Team 

 

Ages 10 to 15, Opti Race is an advanced racing class, sailors must have 3-4 years of Optimist sailing and the recommendation of previous instructors and/or the sailing director to participate. This class will have a focus on racing tactics & strategies to prepare for participation in regional Southern Mass Sailing regattas as well as our local Unkie Cup Series. The Opti race team will have a rigorous regatta schedule with days built in for rest as well. Transportation will be the responsibility of sailors and their families. Use of the club trailer will be provided for those that sign up and are able to assist in the regatta organizational efforts.

420 Race Team

  

Ages 13 to 17, the goal of the class is to gain experience in the Club 420 sailboat with a focus on racing techniques. Both A&B sections will learn to skipper and crew in a 420. In addition the sailors will rig spinnakers and wear trapeze harnesses daily to mimic regatta race days. In the past participants have provided their own boats; however, the club owns a limited number of 420s that will be used in practice and/or regattas when necessary. The coaches of this class will set a regatta schedule and communicate that to sailors and their families during the first week of the program.

 Private Lessons

 

WHYC offers private lessons for all levels and ages. Members are encouraged to sign up for multiple lessons and these can be scheduled with the Program Director. We can accommodate a number of possibilities for times and number of sessions. Private lessons can be in club boats or privately owned boats and can include both youth sailors and/or family and friends! 


Private Lessons are $200 per 2-hour minimum lesson during the week and $300 per 2 hour minimum session on weekends. Pricing is per boat. For questions contact the program director at: sailwhycprogramdirector@gmail.com

Adult Sailing

 

This class is for all beginners and long time sailing adults! With no experience necessary, sailors gain comfort and confidence on the water. For more seasoned sailors, this will be a class with a chance to sail a variety of sailboats in all kinds of conditions both as skipper and crew. Overall this class is a great way to spend time on the water with old friends, old salts and new members alike. Many of our past adults have been parents of our youth sailors and just want to have fun (and learn) too! Come with a lifejacket, come as you are.
